Best Birthday present ever!

Last year in September I had my 30th Birthday and ingenious like my beloved Missus is she gave me a very special Birthday present which I finally was able to enjoy on friday.

Some of you might remember an earlier post of mine about the "Alte Tante Ju" making sightseeing flights over some German towns (for those of you who don't here's the link). From that day on every time I heard the distinctive sound of her engines from above one could see me standing on my roof-deck or tightly pressing my nose to one of the roof windows like a little child. As the Missus finally had enough of cleaning the windows of nose and finger prints she thought it fitting to bestow such an flight upon me for my Birthday. To tell the truth it didn't really stop me from continuing my obsession and even now having enjoyed the trip of my life I'm running for the windows as soon as I hear her fly over.

So without much further ado here's some selected impressions I took to share with you:

here she is in all her splendour as seen from the gate

I used the transfer by bus for some shots of all angles

that little door actually is meant to be an emergency exit as well

first look out of my window

4 crew (2 Pilots, 1 Flight Engineer & a Stewardess) for 16 passengers. Unthinkable nowadays.

now I know why young girls only take selfies from above ;-) From excitement I even forgot to shave...

ready for take off...

... wait there's one of those newish wannabe airplanes

and finally in the air

the cockpit was completely overhauled and is stuffe full of modern equipment

and very cramped it is

a look on one of the bigger Nuernbergian urban recreation areas the "Wöhrder See"

on the extreme right just over the engine on can see the main railway station

the towns landmark the "Kaiserburg" in the middle...

... that must roughly have been the time when my lady saw us passing over.

really a great day for a flight. Bavarian Heaven as we call it here... White & Blue

and unfortunately it was already time for the runway once again.

one of the five professional engineers only taking care about the old lady overseeing the refill process from the wing.

well... everyone needs a poser shot, right?

beneath the wing

final good bye

Well, what more could I say? It really was an awesome trip and hearing the drone of the engines from close alone was worth it. So all my love and thanks to my missus for such an unbeatable gift.

Hope you enjoyed that slightly off-topic trip to the skies at least a fraction as much as I did. I can only recommend to you if you're in Germany in summer try to fit a trip on the old lady into your shedule. The experience realy is worth it.

Thanks for reading!

  1. A truly fantastic birthday present, legendary plane and legendary missus!!! Love the design with the allu-plating. Looks like one of these cool Rimowa suitcases (with actually features the Junkers plane in their commercials) - and great shots of Nürnberg. I visited the place just last autumn, and the Kaiserburg was amazing, and so was the Saure Zipfeln and the kellerbräu we had at Alte Küch'n...;0) Of course I also bought the famous christmas cookies, which are sadly all gone now... Have to visit again!

  2. What a wonderful birthday present! Must have been truly amazing experience! Ju 52 is definately one iconic aircraft. That corrugated plating covering it certainly gives it an unmistakable look.

    1. Well, actually there was some crazy old guy coming along with an old leather pilot cap and a scarf like those worn by biplane pilots.

  7. That is an amazing gift. You're very lucky to have the opportunity for something like that. There are so few of these old planes left, and fewer in flying shape.

  9. 30th birthday? I even can't remember mine...

Joking aside what a wonderful present! We had the same for my father when he turned 60 and he really enjoyed it. As you they had perfect weather, he took a lot of pictures and loved the 'feeling' of this old aircraft.
