So what's this all about? Well, it has taken me a while but I'm finally back painting some reinforcements for my SCW Nationalists.
The Hotchkiss Mitrailleuse Mle 1914, or just Hotchkiss, was a french medium machine gun dating back to World War 1. Originally it used the 8mm Lebel round which, due to its conical form, wasn't really suited for use as ammunition for machine guns.
A considerable number of these machine guns were built in Spain under license prior to the outbreak of the Civil War. The local version was chambered to accept 7mm Mauser cartridges which were one of the more common types of cartridges in the Spanish arsenal. The machine gun was used extensively by both sides during the whole conflict.
As with all the miniatures I've painted for this period thus far, these are from the excellent and highly recommended range produced by Empress Miniatures. At some point I want to get back to this piece and add a crate or two of ammunition but probably not anytime soon.
